Abstract

Modern progressive globalization processes, blurring of borders between countries and an unstable geopolitical climate in the world provoke an increased interest of representatives of different nationalities in each other, which undoubtedly leads to a dialogue of cultures. Language, as a storehouse of knowledge about the people, is able to display national characteristics, the national picture of the world of a particular linguocultural community. Language also tends to form images of some peoples in the linguistic consciousness of others. The creation and display of the image of a foreign people in the minds of another people is carried out at the expense of nationally marked elements of the language. Such elements include precedent phenomena that fix, preserve and display the ethno-national features and characteristics of a particular people. In our study, we will consider and compare the use and functioning of the precedent phenomena of Spanish culture in the novels "Spanish Diary" by M. Koltsov and "For whom the bell tolls" by E. Hemingway during their stay in revolutionary Spain.

Modern progressive globalization processes, blurring of borders between countries and an unstable geopolitical climate in the world provoke an increased interest of representatives of different nationalities in each other, which undoubtedly leads to a dialogue of cultures. Language, as a storehouse of knowledge about people, is able to display national characteristics, the national picture of the world of a particular linguo-cultural community. Language also tends to form images of some peoples in the linguistic consciousness of others. The verbalization of an image of a country or nation in a linguo-cultural perception of another nation is a subject matter of linguoimagology. The creation and display of the image of a foreign person in the minds of other people is carried out at the expense of nationally marked elements of the language. Such elements include precedent phenomena that fix, preserve and display the ethno-national features and characteristics of a particular people. In our study, we will consider and compare the use and functions of the precedent phenomena of Spanish culture. The aim of the research is to analyse the vision and perception of the precedent phenomena of the Spanish culture by the representatives of other ethno-cultural societies. The object of the research is the text fragments where the authors express their assessment and perception of the Spanish precedent phenomena. The subject of the research is to study the functions of the precedent phenomena in the linguistic consciousness of the authors, the ways and means of their verbalization in the novels. The autobiographical novel ‘Spanish Diary’ by a Soviet writer, M. E. Koltsov, and the novel ‘For whom the bell tolls’ by a famous American author, E. Hemingway, have been chosen as material for the research. The novels depict the most dramatic events of Spanish society – The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Historically, the supporters of Spanish fascism could not come to terms with the prospect of the loss of political power in the country, so, with the support of Italy and Germany, they attacked the Republic. Traditionally, any war accumulates and engages all kinds of resources of any nation. Thus, events provoked by war are considered to be very bright and vivid for the analysis of an image of any nation or country. The methodology of the research consists of a descriptive method, a method of linguistic interpretation, a linguo-cultural method and a comparative method.
